14/139 The Parish Church of St Mary

22.2.55 I

Church. Chancel, nave, north and south porches and west tower with hipped tiled roof. Chancel and nave early Norman, with C13 windows in the chancel and C14 windows in the nave. Tower rebuilt about 1600. The east window, dated 1638, is a heraldic window, brought from the Manor Farmhouse and inserted in the church at that date, but the glass is older. The church contains a fine series of brasses to members of the Barttelot family of Stopham House dating from the early C15 onwards. There is also a good series of mural tablets to the Barttelots. Very good medieval church, unrestored.
