Lee Farmhouse

22.2.55

II*

Farmhouse. This house is partly in Fittleworth parish. It has a date in two places
on the walls which is sometimes interpreted to be 1492 and, if so, is said to be one
of the earliest instances of the use of Arabic figures. More probably it is 1592, in
which case it was built by Sir William Stanley, who bought the property from the Lee
family. Timber-framed building with red brick infilling, partly refaced with Hythe sandstone rubble and cement. Horsham slab roof. Casement windows with stone mullions on the south side and wooden mullions and small square panes on the north side.
