The Mill
GV II
Watermill, now house. Medieval origins, but mainly mid/late C18, date 1838
probably refers to roof raising: restored mid C20. Regular coursed limestone
with Collyweston slate roof. Originally rectangular plan, now L-shape. 2
storeys with attic. Main front is an irregular 5-window range at first floor of
C19 style casements under original wood lintels. Some first floor openings were
originally door openings. 2 small openings to ground floor right also under wood
lintels. 2 gabled eaves doors to attic and 5 small C20 attic windows. Central
C20 door under original wood lintels with C20 canopy. Former cart entrance, to
far right, now blocked recess, has wood lintel over. Ashlar quoins and 8 dated
tie plates c.1838 between first floor and attic. C20 stone stack at ridge and
lateral stack to right, 2 mill races pass under building to left and right of
main entrance. That to left has ashlar segmental-arch head. Elevation to right
is of C19 wing at right angles to main range. 3 C20 garage doors at ground floor
and 2-window range of C19 style casements with ashlar surrounds at first floor.
2 eaves dormers to attic. Rear elevation is similar to front elevation with 3
irregularly spaced C19 style casements. Ground floor has 3 C20 French doors.
Ashlar buttress to right hand corner set back at first floor level probably to
accommodate earlier sluice gate. Bay to far left of main front has straight
joint, also visible at rear, indicating later build. Interior: ground floor has
remains of sluice and wheel gear. Attic room to right of main front has remains
of pulley gear. Some original floor structure and original roof structures
survive.
