2/75 The Nook and pump and trough in the grounds II

House. Late C18 or early C19. Brown brick with ashlar details, slate roof, two brick gable end stacks with terracotta pots. Two storeys, attic and cellar. Three bays. Main (garden) front in Flemish bond on an ashlar plinth. Central entrance doorway, stone doorcase with flanking engaged Tuscan columns and entablatures surmounted by an open pediment over a radial bar fanlight; 6 panel door: upper 4 panels glazed, lower panels flush and beaded. A large sash, to either side (4x5 panes) with sills at plinth top level, 3 sashes to first floor (each 4x4 panes). All sashes have exposed weight boxes and glazing bars, stone flat arch lintols with raised keyblocks. Stone cornice with mutules and blocking course. Two shallow lead roofed dormers. Entrance front in English garden wall bond. Doorway to right in recessed porch with marble step. Six panel door, upper panels glazed with stained glass. Central brick semi-circular arched window to stairwell with barred margin panes. A low casement to understair below. In bay to left a sash on both floors ( 5 x 3 panes).On first floor above doorway a narrow sash with sash sidelights. Other than stairwell window, all openings have flush stone wedge lintols. Ovolo moulded gutter cornice. A small central flat roofed dormer. On gable end wall to left of main front an added single storey canted bay with flat roof and stone coping: central French doors and side sashes all with glazing bars. Attached to right hand gable end wall, a high garden wall with semi-circular arched doorway under a stone coped gablet with 2 flanking and one crowning ball finials. Stone latch and hinge blocks set in the doorway jambs. Interior: 6 panel doors, panelled jamb linings to windows, simple moulded plaster cornices, dog-leg staircase with cut and bracketed strings. The detached house is set in extensive grounds. In the grounds a cast iron pump with sandstone trough.
