THORNER CARR LANE SE3740 LS14 (north side) 16/171 Large aisled barn at Manor Farm
II
Barn. Late-medieval timbered interior, perhaps some contemporary walling with alteration to south-aisle mid C18, C20 alterations. Random-rubble sandstone to early work (partly rendered), C18 hammer-dressed stone, C20 red-brick patching; asbestos roof. Aisled, of 7 bays. North side: large doorway cut into 1st bay of aisle up to first purlin in roof. Doorway in 3rd bay has square base block to left, wooden-lintel and plank door. To right, occupying 4th and 5th bays brick wall. Other bays have rubble walls. Rear: south side: quoins; aisle cut back in centre 3 bays with former stables in outer bays with quoined angles. 3rd bay has tall cart entry with harr-hung doors. 4th bay in hammer- dressed stone. 5th bay has posts on padstones visible with mortices for aisle- ties, set between C20 brick. Within the re-entrant angles of aisles doorways, one with stable-door. Right-hand return: rendered gable has large doorway cut in the lintel recently raised c1985. Left-hand gable of rubble.
Interior: brick wall divides the barn into 3 + 4 bays. Posts, on padstones, have joweled heads and long curved braces to arcade-plate and tie-beam. Heavy aisle-ties, some with curved principals. Wall-plate sits on aisle-tie which has mortice-holes to soffie and remains of wall post (sawn flush) indicating formerly timber-framed external walls. Original arcade-plate and tie-beams, some heavily-cambered,but all except 3rd truss have replaced principals and struts. 3rd truss has steeply-pitched principal rafters and single curved angle-strut. 4th truss retains original curved struts. Purlins re-used from previous timbered structure, most replaced in softwood. Rafters replaced except for 3rd bay where some square-cut rafters survive.
Though much abused in the present century the timbered interior is a rare and important survival in the region. Part of the Mexborough estate.
