Details

ST 68 SE WESTERLEIGH BADMINTON ROAD Nibley 1/405 No 369 (Willow Cottage) and 373

II

Farmhouse, formely three, now two dwellings. Possibly C16 or early C17, most windowsC20. Rendered, double roman tile roof. Originally may have been through- passage plan with heated room to right, and heated room left with fireplace backing on passage; a second stack, now cropped below ridge occurs at left gable, and may represent position of original fireplace, with central one inserted. Position of stack not established. A wing at right angles, at left end, is partly early fabric extended by one bay in the C20. Front has 2 half gables to No 371, and one smaller half gable to No 373; one and a half storeys, 3 windows. In No 371 all C20 2-light casement replacements, that to ground floor, right, probably in early door position. To No 373 a C20 casement to gable above small square light and a 2-light steel: all of C20. Set back, left, to No 371, a wing at right angles, with small single floor extension, formerly a shop. All C20 two-light casements. Entrance to No 371 is in centre of return wing in C20 gabled porch. Entrance to No 373 in road front to C20 glazed porch. Ridge stack to left of cross passage, and large external stack to rear of right gable, possibly service wing of original build. Back has various 2-light C20 lights and a lean-to conservatory. Interior of No 371 only inspected: central ground floor room has series of floor beams, close set as rafters, large pennant stone bressummer fire, rebuilt below, relatively high ceiling; deep chamfered beam each side of room at partitions. Middle room has two 3-plank doors, one of which gives to tight winder stair, the risers having face mouldings similar to those on the door planks. Upper floor has remains of two pairs of raised crucks, including heavy member by staircase. At ground floor the door frame between stair and fireplace has a wave mould to stops. Splat balustrade in short length at landing. This house seems to be a one or two-room part to one side of cross passage; the remainder of the plan is in No 373, and there is some degree of overlap at first floor. Roof not fully accessible, mostly later rafters, no sign of smoke blackening. Although considerably modified, the overall form remains in the body of the building to the road, and significant internal structure or fitting to give this historical interest.
