House, now restaurant. Early C17 for Saville Radcliffe. Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. Hall-and-cross-wings plan, the western of which has the remains of a timber-framed structure of c.1500. 2½ storeys. Main house of 5 linear divisions. All have double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with ovolo moulded mullions. 1st division is west wing. 12-light window with 5-light window lacking transoms (formerly 10-light window) to 1st floor. 3-light attic dormer (blocked). Coped gable with lantern finial. 2nd division is gabled 2-storey porch. Doorway with composite jambs and depressed arched lintel with double cyma moulded surround. Lintel bears carved coat of arms inscribed 'S R' for Saville Radcliffe. Over is 6-light window with transoms. Coped gable with kneelers and finials. The 1st floor above the doorway jetties out and is deeply moulded to the soffit. 3rd and 4th divisions are hall range which is set back from the wings. Both have 16-light window with 2 transoms, with 8-light window to 1st floor and 2-light gabled attic dormers with finials. At junction of hall with east wing is inserted C20 doorway in keeping. Over is 2-light window to 1st floor formed by a transom. 5th division is east wing which breaks forward. The return wall facing hall has cross-windows to both floors. Front was sashed in C19, now replaced by 18-light window with 12-light window over to match, early C20. 3-light attic dormer. Coped gable with finials. All windows have hoodmoulds with straight returns. That over porch window is stepped and continues over ground floor windows of hall and east wing. Other finials on parapet between gables. Left hand return wall has 2 lateral stacks. Rear has 2-storey outshut between the wings making the rear range flush. Double chamfered mullioned windows of several lights some with transoms, all with chamfered mullions. One tall lateral stack to hall range at arcade- plate point. Attached to either end are added bays of C19 and mid C20 in keeping. Interior: West wing has large fireplace with depressed arch and skewbacks, close strung stair with turned balusters. Porch leads into former through passage. 1st floor has remains of a timber-framed wing of 3 bays. King post trusses, the northern of which has 2 'A' struts. East wing has oak panelled room to ground floor with elaborate carved overmantel bearing the initials of Saville Radcliffe and his wife Kathleen Hyde (Illustrated in Calderdale M.B.C., Todmorden Trail (1979) p.5).
