STANHOPE A689 NY 93 NE (South side, off) Eastgate 20/97 Horsley Hall 12/10/81 II

House, now hotel. Cl7 with C18 additions and C19 alterations in style of C17. Coursed rubble with some quoins and sandstone ashlar dressings; stone-flagged roof with stone gable copings. 3 storeys, 8 bays, irregular. Boarded door in Tudor-arched surround with stone-mullioned overlight in fourth bay; recessed panel over door contains high-relief coat of arms with Greek motto. Chamfered surrounds to all windows, mostly 2-light; ground-floor transoms, ground and first floor ovolo-moulded mullions; single stair light between fifth and sixth bays; massive external stack between sixth and seventh bay, which is blank except for 2-light first-floor window. First-floor, gutter cornices to left. Fourth bay has 3-light windows, that on the second floor breaking the eaves under large gable; smaller gables over 3 windows to left and 2 to right. Roof has 3 large ridge stacks with panelled chimneys; similar chimneys on front stack.

Interior: rear stair removed to allow for installation of panelled ceiling, with moulded beams and baroque pictorial stucco low-relief roundels, said to have come from Cheeseburn Grange,Northumberland; also stucco wall panels and Gothic-style stone chimney piece. Front room has 2 white marble chimney pieces, both corniced and one with scrolled lugged pilasters in French style.
