8/30 Tomb of John Wedgwood in Churchyard of Brown Knowl Methodist Church
GV II
Tomb circa 1869 of John Wedgwood (1788-1869) and his wife Hannah (1814-1891). A square, battered pier with tall, moulded plinth of white'stone standing on a base of rusticated sandstone with cast iron cresting. The pier is inscribed In affectionate remembrance of the late Venerable John Wedgwood who departed this life March 20th 1869 aged 81 years. Also of Hannah, wife of the above who died at Crewe November 15th 1891 aged 77 years. John Wedgwood was related (not in direct line) to Josiah Wedgwood. He was a principal supporter of Bourne and Clowes, founders (in South Cheshire) of the Primitive Methodist sect. Wedgwood was a powerful and well-loved preacher who did much to establish primitive methodism in its native region from its inception in 1819. He was buried at Brown Knowl (the home of a strong primitive methodist community) at his own wish.
