4/87 Lea Newbold Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse: c.1880 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster with some early C20 additions. English garden wall bond orange brick, red tile roof and 3 brick chimneys. Mid C17 style. Irregular plan of varied masses. 3-storey, 3-bay west front. Chamfered plinth and sawtooth bonds at 1st and 2nd floor. Left end bay projects under ornately shaped and finialled gable. Corbelled arcade over semi-circular headed light in ground storey, pairs of 2-light casements in glazing bars above and 4-light in gable. Central bay has added timber framed porch and similar windows above under a shaped gable. Single light in right end bay. South front has another ornate gable this time with strip pilasters. North-front has low staircase tower with pyramidal roof. Interior: Very plain and has lost detail. The playing with masses in a Dutch Jacobean style is similar to Douglas's design for Aldford Hall, Chester Road, Aldford. (q.v.)
