Details
CORFE CASTLE ENCOMBE SY 94 78 9/92 Stables and attached cottages at Encombe, 100m west south- west of Encombe House GV II Stables with attached cottages. Late C18 - early C19. Ashlar stone walls, hipped slate roof with modillion cornice. Ashlar stacks on ridge, and rising from eaves at front of cottage wings. U-shaped plan, with stables in centre and cottages in projecting wings at each end. One storey and attics. In centre of stable range an open section, with shallow pediment and moulded cornice carried on 4 Tuscan columns. Openings between columns partly infilled with panelled doors. Diocletian window in pediment, with sash with glazing bars. Above the pediment an octagonal clock and bell turret, of timber, with copper domed roof and weathervane. The lower (Clock) section has shallow segmental pediments to alternate faces. Bell section has round-headed openings in alternate faces. On each side of the central feature a range with ledged doors and sashes with glazing bars on ground floor. In attic, each range has a central raised pedimented dormer with moulded cornice and round-headed loft door. Projecting cottage wings at each end, each have, on inner facing wall, a flush panel door. 2 sashes with centre glazing bars on ground floor. 2 raised pedimented dormers with sashes with vertical glazing bars in attic.
