Details

PENTON GRAFTON RAMRIDGE PARK SU 34 NW 4/18 Walled garden to south . of Woodside II Former kitchen garden to Ramridge Park (q.v.) now walled garden. C19; later alterations. South and east walls of chalk cob rendered with lime hair mortar and on flint and brick base course; north and west walls of red brick in English, Flemish, and Flemish garden wall bonds with chamfered offset below narrower upper sections and straight joints with cob walls; plain tile and stone coping, west wall with replacement concrete coping. Walls, approximately 2 metres high., enclose rectangular garden and have iron fixings for use with espaliered fruit trees. Blocked entrance in south wall has brick jambs and timber lintel; segmental-arched entrance at south end of west wall; enlarged opening in north wall; north end of west wall removed. The cob walls were constructed by traditional piled method in approximately 6 lifts.
