SE 02 NW HEBDEN ROYD ROCHDALE CANAL 2/280 (south side) - Upper Foot Canal overflow ford approx. 30 metres to north-west of Canal Bridge

GV II

Canal overflow ford. c1800. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Stone setts, wood and brick. Timber balks edge canal from which water can overflow, passing over the 2-metre wide ford laid with stone setts, and down the hillside into the River Calder below. Spanning the ford are the square brick piers from a later bridge, now gone, but of which the round-topped ashlar parapet survives. The Rochdale Canal was opened up in sections between 1798 and 1804. The line was originally surveyed by James Brindley in 1776,resurveyed by John Rennie in 1791 and construction was finally supervised by William Jessop (engineer) and William Crossley (resident engineer).
