4/24 Denstone College Chapel -

GV II

School chapel. 1879-1887. By Carpenter and Ingelow. Coursed and squared rough faced stone with ashlar dressings; hipped clay tile roof with crested ridge tiles. Forms the east wing of Denstone College (q.v.); 4 bay nave, polygonal apse and flanking towers; each nave bay division and each angle of the apse is marked by a buttress; late C13 Gothic style. Nave has pointed windows of 3 lights with Geometrical style tracery of 3 cusped circles over; the towers have elongated lancets, the chancel has tall slim pointed windows of 2 lights with traceried circle above, all windows linked at sill level by a string course. Interior: Very tall pointed chancel arch with a smaller pointed arch to each side;) segmental west arch and organ gallery above with wooden cusped open work panelling; king post and scissor truss roof with tie beam, collar and cusped bracing; chancel roof has plain rib vaulting springing from plain clustered columns with moulded capitals; stained glass in the chancel windows, the westernmost north window and the central south window. Fittings: Low wooden pews/choir stalls parallel to north and south walls, panelling at rear with bracketed. crenellated canopy; 2 western pews, that to the north of the west arch has an inscribed brass plaque; "This stall is erected and this plate affixed thereto by the provost and fellows to perpetuate the remembrance of the zeal, perseverance and success of the Rev. H. Meynell M.A. their first Provost in the foundation of this and their other schools and in the building of this chapel dedicated July 27 1887". B.O.E. PP 114-115.
