5/48 Calwich Abbey and - garden steps
GV II
Small country house remains on site of the medieval Calwich Priory. 1849-50. Ashlar; slate roofs; ashlar stacks. Asymmetrical plan; Tudor/Jacobean style. Garden front: Basically L-plan, compact main house to left hand, lower service wing to right hand. Main house: 2 storeys; roughly 4 bays, principal feature is projecting gabled break with carved finials to kneelers, to left a tall external chimney with paired stacks and a panel, to right a gabled dormer hard against projecting gable; raised and shaped quoins, moulded string over ground floor raised irregularly over features, mitred and moulded eaves cornice raised over gable windows, large chamfer mullioned windows, transomed to south return gable; projecting gable had 3-light window to ground floor and 2- light window above; between chimney and projecting gable, one range of plain windows; paired chimney at junction with Service wing: Principal features are 2 gabled projections, the left hand one with apex chimney; roughly 2:1:2:1 bays; South elevation: 2 gables, left hand one smaller, each with small panel. Octagonal link between NW wing (demolished) and rear of house. Flight of stone steps in undergrowth of garden to south. Entrance undiscovered. This house was derelict and in a dangerous condition at time of survey (November 1984).
