House. Probably C17 in origin, remodelled and added to in mid-C19.
Roughcast with sandstone plinth; clay tile roofs with fleur-de-lys
crested ridge tiles; ashlar ridge stacks, that to main range of
circular. section, that to NW wing has 4 clustered shafts all of
octagonal section. The principal range aligned NW-SE is probably
C17, remodelled mid-C19; the mid-C19 NW wing projects from the
NE face of the main range to form an L-shape; further extensions to
the SW. NE Elevation: 1 storey and attic; 2:1 bays; main range
to left, projecting gabled wing to right with carved shaped and
bracketed barge boards and ground floor small pane window. Main
range: ground floor canted bay to right with hipped roof and plate
glass sashes; small fixed light window projecting slightly with
moulded base and top and carved jambs to right of centre; C20
casement to left; 2 gabled dormers with carved shaped and bracketed
barge boards and small pane horizontal sliding sashes; small fixed
light window immediately below eaves to right. Left hand return of
wing: Ground floor canted bay to right with hipped roof and central
2-leaf half-glazed door flanked by plate glass sashes; ground floor
small-pane window to left; 2 gabled dormers with carved shaped and
bracketed barge boards. N.E. Elevation: NW wing to left, gabled
main range to centre and extensions to right. NW wing has a small
glazing bar casement to first floor right; central door with
bracketed hood crested in decorative ironwork. Gable of main range:
C20 top opening windows to ground floor, -light chamfered mullioned
window with straight hood mould and 2-light chamfer mullioned attic
window. Extensions to right: projecting single storey lean-to out-
building in front of a recessed extension aligned NE-SW. Interior:
Inglenook fireplace to main range; mid-C19 carved woodwork; exposed
ceiling beams, one with figure carved corbels. Named after the
eponymous hero of George Elliot's novel.
