Details
DOWNHOLLAND SCHOOL LANE (east side) SD 30 NE 7/51 No 107 1-4-1975 II
House. Probably C17. Cruck-framed with walls of painted stone rubble and brick. Thatched roof covered by corrugated asbestos. Single storey. Front wall has 5 irregularly-spaced windows with plain reveals. Door to right of 2nd window. Chimney in line with door. Interior: parts of 4 cruck trusses are exposed. The timber is of light scantling, some of it obviously re-used. An iron ring attached to the southern truss suggests that this end of the building may have been a shippon. The northern bay of the building is divided into the former buttery and parlour. The doorways are not framed into the truss. The southern one has a notched head, a C17 form derived from the ogee arch. Some straight windbraces are exposed in the 2nd bay from the north.
