Details
TQ 2880 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER HERTFORD STREET W1 30/98 24.2.58 No 10 GV I Terraced town house. c.1768-69 as part of the development of the south side of Hertford Street by the elder Henry Holland (builder, of Fulham) with his son, in partnership with John Eldridge - interior by Robert Adam for General Burgoyne 1769-71. Brown brick with stuccoed ground floor, slate roof. 4 storeys, including attic storey, on basement. 3 windows wide. Entrance to left with panelled door and side lights under segmental fanlight, in stucco surround with archivolt and cornice over. Recessed sashes, no glazing bars under flat gauged arches. Moulded stone cornice over 2nd floor and attic parapet with coping. C19 cast iron balconettes to 1st floor. Wrought iron area railings with lampstandards. Fine Adam interior, drawings for which are in the Soane Museum, with enriched and painted plaster ceilings and mouldings, elegant stone staircase with wrought iron balustrade. The house was the residence of General ("Gentleman Johnny") Burgoyne and R. B. Sheridan. Dictionary of British Architects; Howard Colvin Henry Holland, His Life and Architecture: Dorothy Stroud.
