House, C17 with later alterations, remodelled internally circa 1970. Colourwashed
rubblestone, the upper parts rendered cob. Thatched roof, now Norfolk reed with
heavy ridge between gabled ends. Eaves raised over windows on south front and
extended down to form porch roof at rear beyond semi-circular oven projection.
Axial brick stack at west end and left of former cross passage. Formerly 2
storeys, now single storey and single depth plan. Originally probably 3 room plan
consisting of hall to left with fireplace backing onto cross passage and stair in
rear (north) wall projection (now back door) giving access to 2 first floor
chambers. Beyond, an inner room which appears to have been heated when extended
very close to stream. Service (east end) beyond former cross-passage probably
rebuilt on south at least. Service end one time used as workshop.
Long low irregular fenestration in south front. From left; C19 2-light casements, 6
panes each light, left and right of C19 (inserted) plank door with carved C18
brackets reset as imitation consoles to a cantilevered porch. C20 door with cover
strips and window it cross passage entrance (widened for workshop). C19 5-light
fixed window with lapped glass between thin mullions. Small light at right. First
floor windows; C20 2-light timber casements 4 panes each at left, 2-light timber
casement with leaded panes and C19/20 timber fixed light of 6 panes to right.
Interior. C20 kitchen inserted in right half of original hall. Partition between
hall and inner room and first floor no longer extant. Runout stops to chamfered
fireplace lintel and cloam oven to west, hall fireplace lintel cambered also with
cloam oven. Present west room has slate floor. Remains of pegged collar rafter
roof visible in former service end. The architect reports that the other trusses
are simple collar trusses.
