STANHOPE FRONT STREET NZ 0236 (South side, off) Frosterley 40/197 Church of St. Michael and 29.6.71 All Angels GV II

Parish church. 1869 by G R Street. Dressed sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; stone-flagged roof with stone gable copings. West tower; nave with north aisle and north porch; chancel with north organ chamber and vestry. Decorated style. Gabled porch has boarded door with delicate wrought- iron hinges in 2-centred arch under flower-stopped drip-mould. Tower has roll- moulded plinth under tall 2-light west window; 2-light, 2-centred-arched bell openings in second stage have scalloped louvres under tracery. Corbel table supports tall stone-flagged broach spire with 4 lucarnes. Tall weather-cock finial. Gabled north stair-turret. Tracery in 3-light nave and 2-light aisle windows, and in 3-light organ window; cusped 2-light windows in vestry and in chancel; and wide square-headed sanctuary window containing tracery. Sill string, stepped up from wide buttress at east end of nave towards sanctuary, and down under 3-light east window flanked by buttresses. Moulded rain-water heads; wrought-iron bars and rails with trident finials over windows.

Interior: sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings; arch-braced collar truss roof, with cusped struts above collar in nave. North arcade has 4 chamfered roll-moulded arches on round piers with moulded capitals; west arch springs from wall, east has mouldings continuous from pilaster. Chamfered wide chancel arch with figure-stopped dripmould has inner corbelled moulded arch; tall tower arch with continuous triple chamfers. All arches 2-centred. Wide organ arch. Windows have chamfered rere arches. Chancel has 2-light north aumbry and south sedilia with tracery; south sanctuary light. Chancel floor of medieval-style tiles in red, black, glazed green and slip patterns; nave aisles of plain red, black and cream tiles.
