STANHOPE MARKET PLACE NY 9939 (North side) Stanhope

34/227 Earle and Collingwood tombs about 3 metres south of Church of St. Thomas GV II 2 headstones; commemorate 'Jan. wife of Jacob Earle' died 1770; and Jenning (?) and Sarah Collingwood, died 1797 and 1823, aged 24 and 23. Sandstone slabs, about one metre high. Earle headstone fine-grained with elaborately-shaped top; well-cut inscriptions with verses on each side, the reverse reading 'Tir'd with travelling thro'/this world of sin/At length am come to na/tures common Inn/In this dark place here/for to rest a night/In hopes to rise that Christ may give me light'.

Collingwood headstone has shaped top and tooled sides; inscription on reverse 'Mourn not my Friends/Because I died soon/And my Days Journey/Finished at Noon.
