STANHOPE MARKET PLACE NY 9939 (West side) Stanhope 34/237 Castle wall including Market Lodge, gateway and bus shelter GV II Lodge, now office, wall, gateway and shelter, now bus shelter, and room over; Circa 1823 and shelter dated 1875. Snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings; stone-flagged roofs. Rear wall to castle, breaking forward at left at an oblique angle along frontage of Market Place, the left end continuous with 2- and one-storey 2-bay lodge now office; right end 2-storey, one-bay shelter and room over. Boarded double vehicle doors in moulded Tudor-arched gateway; buttressed wall with battlemented parapet, stepped over gate, and roll-moulded crenellations. Lodge at left has plinth and quoins; central door in chamfered round-cornered surround with drip mould; sloping sills and recessed chamfered surrounds to flanking ground-floor windows and to first-floor window in left bay. First-floor string; battlemented parapet continuous over right return gable.
Right end shelter in similar style has angle buttresses flanking boarded door in square-headed surround, and first-floor pierced and bracketed stone balcony. Square-headed blocked doorway behind balcony. Dated shield below battlemented parapet.
