Details
STANHOPE WESTERNHOPE MOOR NY 928344 27/296 Blaeberry Cleugh lead-mine knocking wall and bingstead on west bank of Blaeberry Burn GV II Knocking wall and bingstead. Probably second half C18. Roughly coursed and squared rubble in dry construction with some flat coping. Knocking wall at north: wide stones form wall about 80 cm. high with large flat stones on top, worn at point of impact, on which ore was crushed by hammers; ground behind on level with top of wall enclosed by low side walls and by slope at rear. Bingstead one metre to south: U-shaped, open towards front; walls about 120 cm. high, with front ends stepped back, form enclosure for crushed ore. The knocking wall is a rare survival of an example of primitive ore-dressing techniques, one of only 3 known in the North Pennines. Information from Ian Forbes, Durham C.C.
Historical note: Westernhope mines were worked (for the Blackett amily from early C18 to 1861).
