Details
STANHOPE WESTERNHOPE MOOR NY 93 SW NY 929347 27/298 Westernhope New Mine Washing Floor on east bank of Ash Burn GV II Washing floor. Possibly early C19. Coursed sandstone rubble. U-plan. Retaining wall about 10 metres high and 13 metres wide, with small square opening at left possibly to allow flow of water; walls breaking forward from each end and extending about 20 metres; the right wall also serves as retaining wall for deadheap. Within this area is a knocking wall about ½ metre high and 4 metres wide, with flat stone slabs upon which ore was crushed by hammers, and adjacent bingstead of similar dimensions for holding crushed ore; there is also a buddle, a rectangular enclosure about one by 5 metres formed by low walls, in which finer ore was washed. A rare survival (including one of only 3 knocking walls known in the North Pennines) of primitive ore-dressing techniques.
