SP51NW WESTON ON THE GREEN NORTH LANE (North side)

9/157 Former school and adjoining 23/08/74 house (Formerly listed as The School)

- II

School and house. Cottage possibly C17; school C18, altered C19. Coursed limestone rubble with some wooden lintels and some brick dressings; thatch and plain-tile roofs with rubble and brick stack. 2-unit lobby-entry plan (reduced) with rear wings, plus school range. 2 storeys plus attics and single storey. 2-window front of house has the doorway, with 4-panel door in a C20 porch, to extreme right below a 2-light window now reduced to one light; bay to left has 2-light casements to both floors. Left end wall has aligned windows to 3 floors. Roof has a massive rubble-based 4-shaft stack in line with the entrance. Lower rear wing returns to rear of stack and an adjoining wing, probably later, has a large rubble-based lateral stack. Thatched single-storey school range adjoins to right and its extreme left bay was probably originally part of the house and has been reduced in height. 3-light casement with brick segmental arch is similar to the 3 in remainder of the school range, which breaks forward and has, to extreme left, a plank door in a brick-arched porch. Lower slated bay to extreme right is probably C19 and has a further entrance. School roof has a small wooden ridge ventilator in line with main entrance and, on the right gable, is carried over a small bellcote corbelled out over a cross-shaped gable vent. Interiors not inspected. School range was probably originally a small barn.
