Boundary wall to NE of Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar
GV
II
Boundary wall to naval hospital. Mid C18. Red brick. Tall wall with buttresses and brick coping, encloses the NE corner of the hospital site. HISTORY: The hospital was enclosed to prevent convalescent seamen from deserting. Haslar was the first large hospital built by the navy. Though the wall only survives in sections in parts of the site, the surviving section along the NE side is an important element, with the main entrance (qv), in the layout and operation of this outstanding and remarkably complete complex. Medical stores (qv) were built against its SW elevation in 1853.
