Details
The following building shall be added to the list;
BIRMINGHAM COVENTRY ROAD SP 18 NW (south side), Small Heath 8/10055 Church of St Gregory the Great II Anglican church. 1911-12, by J.L. Ball, built by the Barnsleys; completed 1926-28 in association with H.W. Hobbiss. Red brick, mainly in English garden wall bond, and with stone and tile dressings. Clay Roman tile roof with gabled ends and corbelled brick eaves. PLAN: Basilican plan of seven bays with an apse at the liturgical east [south] end and gallery at the west [north] end. The apse and the three eastern bays of the nave were built in 1911-12 and the west end was completed in 1926-28. Arts and Crafts Byzantine style. EXTERIOR: The aisles have blind arcading with tile and stone tympanii; the clerestorey has round-headed windows in stone frames. The semi-circular apse has flat pilaster buttresses, stone frieze with brick zigzag pattern and blind arcaded clerestorey with stone colonnettes and stone and tile chequer pattern. Similar stepped arcading in the east gable above and in the west gable end above a cicular window and Crucifix. Two small bellcotes over the east gable with Roman tile roofs. INTERIOR: 6-bay arcades with tall grey Cornish granite piers, the two at the east end of the south side with Composite capitals, the remainder unfinished cushion-shaped capitals; plastered round arcade arches and apse arch flanked by small niches. Timber gallery at west end with thin tapered posts with cushion capitals. Moulded plaster coffered ceiling. Painted decoration on aisle tie-beams. Painted rood. SOURCE: Foster, A.
