CHURCH ROAD, BINSTEAD
The Keys
(Formerly listed as Binstead House)
II
Large house of late Cl8 origin enlarged and refaced circa 1830 to 40.
Set in it's own grounds which are terraced down to seashore. Two
storeys and attic, coursed rubble with cement rendered quoins and
plinth. Mansard and hipped slate roofs. The flat roofed dormers rise
above the cement rendered parapet which has square panelled piers
dividing panels of turned balusters. Block cornice. West entrance
front, has two later superimposed bays of three windows, sash, later
glazing bars, with turned balusters to their parapets as on attic.
Five windows, recessed, sash later glazing bars, moulded rendered
surrounds. One tripartite and two French windows to ground floor.
North front: five windows similar to those on West front. The outer bays
slightly project and instead of ground floor windows, have blind niches.
Centre ground floor large rendered rectangular bay with parapet of
turned balusters divided by squat piers. Four light transomed window,
centre of two lights as French windows, pilaster strips and frieze.
East front: five windows, one in deeply recessed bay and one in
projecting bay to South. Superimposed bay windows to South of recess,
rectangular on first floor of one light, ground floor cented of three,
light sash, glazing bars later, frieze and cornice. Ground floor
bay window of three lights to North with balustraded parapet. A good
barred vaulted glazed conservatory projects from recessed bay. Wood
frame with glazing bars. Fine radial glazing to lunette. The
interior has a fine staircase rising in one flight and dividing in two
up to first floor landing. Turned balusters continued along landing
with continuous hand rail scrolled at bottom. The wall facing first
flight has two stucco plaques of classical figures. The stair well
rises the full height of the house and is lit by an oval light. The
room adjoining to the North has a bracketed gallery with Doric
pilasters below. The gallery has the same balusters and hand rail
as the staircase.
