SZ 59 SE 7/168 CHURCH ROAD 18-MAY-1972 HAVENSTREET CHURCH OF ST PETER
II
Parish church. 1852. Thomas Hellyer of Ryde. Rubble with ashlar dressings; steeply pitched red tile roofs with every fifth course curved and decorative ridge tiles. EXTERIOR: Nave with lower chancel, no aisles but integral vestry to north. South porch with moulded architraves and engaged colonettes. Western bellcote. Tripartite lancets under hood moulds to east and slender lancets to other elevations. Corner stepped buttresses. INTERIOR: Nave has scissor rafter roof. Pointed Chancel arch with open chancel screen that has coloured rood figures. Reredos described in 1969 as 'towering' with painted panels but this no longer apparent in 2005 photos. The organ is said to be late-C17. Lancets have coloured and figurative glass.
A delightfully scaled church of 1852 designed by notable local architect Thomas Hillyer in an Early English style that survives well and forms a centrepiece of the small community of Havenstreet.
