TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES'S SQUARE SW1 81/94 No 9 (including No 7 24.2.58 Duke of York Street) GV II* End of terrace town house. 1736 by Henry Flitcroft with Benjamin Timbrell, builder and promoter. Brown brick, slate roof. 4 storeys and basement. 3 windows wide. Entrance in Duke of York Street. Recessed sashes with glazing bars under flat gauged brick arches. 1st floor plat band. Stone cornice over 2nd floor, parapet with coping. 3 storey 6 window return to Duke of York Street with arched doorway and canted open Doric porch carrying 1st floor bay window of 3 sash lights. 1st floor oriel bay window to right added in 1906. Wrought iron area railings. No 9 was built to a uniform design including the railings with Nos 10 and 11. Fine interior best preserved on ground floor with panelling, cornices etc , Ionic columned hall leads to originally top lit stair compartment, the stairs with architrave closed strings, turned balusters and newels of mahogany, the treads of oak rising to 1st floor; walls have framed decorative stucco work panels at 1st floor level and on 2nd floor former gallery. 1st floor rooms retain cornices etc. Survey of London; vol XXIX
