Pair of quadrant screen walls, lodges and linking gates, with
railings within semi-circular grassed area set back from road.
Dated 1853 on east side of No 1, probably by Lewis Vulliamy for
Robert Stayner Holford. Central elaborate cast iron carriage
gates between square stone piers with moulded cornices and
ornamental vases, joined to pedestrian gates on each side set in
ashlar arches with pierced balustrade over. Flanking are 2
virtually identical lodges in Elizabethan style with similar
stylistic details to Westonbirt House (q.v.). Adjoining gates are
small square 2-storey towers with rusticated angle pilasters,
decorative plat band over, ground floor with round headed single
light to front, ornamental date or initial plaque on 3 sides on
upper storey, cornice with pierced parapet and ball finials, small
ogee domes. Open arcaded base on inside which extends back for
further 2 bays alongside single storey section with Flemish gable
to front and back, canted oriel window to front and stepped 3-light
stone mullion and transom with square hoodmould to rear. Set back
round-headed single light to outside with raised semi-circular
parapet and small piece of linking wall then single small
rectangular light with small room behind wall. Quadrant walls in
ashlar in 3 bays with square piers with low domed caps, with corner
to inside and on main wall along roadside set with 2 taller and
rusticated piers with strapwork gable between and spiked ball
finial on inner pier of main wall pair. Railings describe
complementary quadrants and are formed by twisted iron posts with
spiked ball finials and decorative base, with spiked chain hung
between.
