Details
TQ 2980 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES'S SQUARE, 82/40 SW1 24.2.58 Statue of. William III (in centre of square garden) G.V. I Equestrian statue. 1807 by John Bacon junior but very likely to a design of his father's dating back to 1794. Cast bronze on bow-ended high stone pedestal set on plinth which may be earlier. The King is depicted as a Roman general, but with late C.17 dressed hair,astride a spirited horse, the design probably inspired by Rysbrack's equestrian statue of William in Queen's Square, Bristol. The statue was provided for under the will of Samuel Travers, d.1724. Survey of London; Vol. XXIX.
