WESTONBIRT WITH A433 ST 88 NE LASBOROUGH (off south side) 10/178 Series of garden terraces to south of Westonbirt House GV II
Series of ornamental terraced steps and walls dropping down through 5 flights of steps to circular pool with central fountain and ornamental stone seat as southern terminal point. 1863-70, or slightly later, possibly designed by Lewis Vulliamy in conjunction with Westonbirt House (q.v.). Approximately half-way down the retaining ashlar terrace walls fan out into 2 quadrants with small square piers and with 4 large gadrooned ornamental urns matching those on terrace immediately to south of house. Top terrace, approximtely 85m long from wall of churchyard of Church of St. Catherine (q.v.) on west, to flight of steps on east, has trefoil pierced parapet on south side with moulded coping and polygonal end piers with blind trefoil arcading and strapwork frieze below shallow domed caps. Shell niches and strapwork stone ornament curve from piers into centre and end steps. Stone seat to west end, sheltered by semi-circular plain wall against wall of churchyard. Integral part of formal setting of Westonbirt House. (James Lees-Milne, Country Life Vol 151, 172)
