Details
LANGAR CUM BARNSTONE CHURCH LANE SK73SW (north side) 5/103 Langar House 12.2.52 GV II* Small country house. Early C18. Brick. Steeply pitched, hipped, sprocketed, Welsh slate roof with iron gutter-brackets. Two centrally placed stacks. First-floor brick band. Two storeys and attics. Symmetrical 5-bay facade with central doorway which has moulded door- case, pulvinated frieze and dentilled, segmental pediment. To each side are two 9 over 6-pane sashes. Five similar sashes to 1st floor. Three, C19 gabled dormers to attic. Lean-to addition on left return. 3-bay right return with a doorway which has console brackets supporting a hood, and similar windows to front. Two-storey hipped roof addition at rear, in keeping. Interior: stair with shaped tread ends and slender balusters, alternate turned and twisted. Full inspection not possible at time of survey. Birthplace of Samuel Butler (1835-1902) author of EREHWON, novelist, satirist and writer, and son of the Rev. Thomas Butler.
