TQ 3079 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SMITH SQUARE SW1 101/71 24.2.58 Nos. 3 to 5(consec) G.V. II* Terraced houses. 1726,as part of Sir James Smith's development of the square. Brown brick, tiled roofs. 3 storeys, basements and dormered mansards. Each front 3 windows wide, No. 5 with long 5-window return to Lord North Street. Nos. 3 and 4 have doorways to left, wooden doorcases with carved scroll brackets to cornice-hoods (No. 4 with thin pilasters set against rustications). No. 5 has entrance in Lord North Street return with doorcase of engaged Ionic columns, dentil cornice and pediment. Recessed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged arches, stuccoed reveals. Brick plat band over ground floor and similar plat band over 2nd floor to No. 3; parapet with coping. No. 5 has stone tablet beneath 2nd floor right hand window by corner inscribed "Smith Square 1726". Fine wrought iron area railings with scrollwork flanking entrances; attached to the corner standard of the railings with Lord North Street a wrought iron lamp bracket curves out over pavement. Interiors , although with alterations/restorations,retain substantial elements of original panelling, passage halls and dog leg staircases with cut and carved strings continued to top floor by closed strings, turned balusters, etc. Part of an exceptionally well preserved early C.18 enclave with Lord North, Barton and Cowley Streets q.v.
