Details
TQ 2981 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOHO SQUARE, W1 58/24 24.2.58 No. 26 GV II* Terrace town house. 1788-89, probably to the owner Sir William Robinson's designs. Stock brick, stucco ground floor, slate roof. 3 storeys and dormered mansard. 2 bays wide. Ground floor altered with 2 pairs of panelled and glazed c.1900 doors up flight of steps. 1st floor has large single Venetian window inscribed in semicircular arched reveal with stuccoed tympanum, the tripartite window framed by an Ionic order of pilasters and columns with entablatures and central archivolt, blind balustrade between dies below sill. 2nd floor with recessed sashes (later C19 glazing) under flat gauged arches. Painted stone cornice and parapet with coping, 1st floor sill band. Window guards to 2nd floor. Extensive interiors (as the site extends south behind No. 1 Greek Street) retaining a number of good original features, despite alterations, including Ionic colonnade screen to large top lit stair compartment with stone staircase rising to 1st floor cantilevered gallery with scrollwork wrought iron balusters of great delicacy, lion mask decorated band at 2nd floor level, bracketed cornice below ceiling cove with guilloche surround to large roof light; richly modelled cornices and numerous carved and pedimented doorcases and good joinery including doors veneered in mahogany by Thomas Chippendale, built-in bookcase etc. Survey of London; Vol. XXXIII.
