PREES C.P. SHREWSBURY STREET SJ 5433-5533 (east side) 14/98 No 1 - 28.10.60 GV II Includes No. 1, Church Street. House. Early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with painted brick infill, rebuilt and rendered to ground floor; slate roofs. Three-bay lobby-entry plan with central 2-storey porch and short range to rear on left forming L-shape; C19 painted brick addition to right. 2 storeys and attic. Framing: first-floor of main range, probably formerly jettied, has 2 rectangular panels to front and V-struts from collars to left gable end and porch; ground floor underbuilt in brick and rendered. Rear range (painted in imitation of timber frame to Church Street side) has square and rectangular panels to back and V-struts from collar. 1:1:1 windows, 3-light late C19 casement to left and C20 casements to porch and to right. Ground floor has C20 shop front to left and late C19 casement to right of porch. Brick projection in front of C19 addition to right has late C19 shop front. 4-panel door in porch (top panels now glazed) and plain pilastered C19 doorcase with bracketed hood and 4-panel door (top panels also glazed) to left gable end. Prominent central red brick ridge stack and integral end stack to rear range. Interior: inspection not possible at time of resurvey (February 1986) but likely to be of interest.
