2. Later C16 or early C17 merchant's house of "deux corps de batimnts" type, remodelled and refronted early C19. 3 storeys. 1 window. The separate kitchen block and gallery have been demolished; the kitchen is recorded as having a frieze decorated with carved wooden busts. Hipped Welsh slate roof with rendered stack. Plastered, timber-framed front with rusticated pilaster strips on quoins masking masonry party walls. Jettied 2nd floor carried at west end by moulded granite corbel. 2nd floor with architraved sash window with glazing bars, 1st floor with 3 lights, segmental bowed sash window with glazing bars. Wooden shopfront with pilasters carrying entablature; modern shop window and doorway. Architraved house doorway with raised and fielded 6 panel door approached by steps; rectangular fanlight with margin lights. Interior altered, with early C19 staircase and chimneypieces.A rental of 1675 refers to Dr Richard Burthogge,..."for pillars before his house". (M. Laithwaite).
