Details

TQ 2880 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOUTH STREET, W1 79/60 No 38 including area railings and pair of piers GV II Substantial town mansion. Dated 1920. Wimperis, Simpson and J Murray Easton. Red handmade brick. Portland stone dressings. Steep pantiled mansard to parapet. 2 storeys plus attic plus 2 tiers of dormers, 9 bays. Central entrance in projecting stone faced enclosed porch with Ionic half columns and pilasters and prominent keystone; broken scrolly pediment with dated cartouche set in outer open pediment of painted lead. Panelled door. Giant pilaster strips to corners and between second and third and seventh and eighth bays, rising from ground to first floor and echoed in attic. Square headed windows to ground and first floors, with intermediate circular windows to outer pairs of bays. Windows to attic mainly segmental headed, but circular to third, fifth and seventh bays. Gauged heads; flush frames, glazing bars. Enriched modillion cornice above first floor; parapet; elaborate torch finials above pilasters to parapet. Lower dormers segmental headed, corniced, upper comprising square headed triplets; sashes, glazing bars. Cast and wrought iron area railings with pair of Portland stone piers with pineapple finials to either end. Interior not inspected.
