Details
TQ 2880 SW and NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOUTH STREET, Wl 68/92 ;79/8 (north side) St George's Church of England Primary School and No 49 G.V. II School and flatted teacher's house. 1897-98 by P.A. Robson (son of London School Board architect) following 1896 competition. Red brick with plenty of stone dressings, slate roofs. Distinctive Free Style Jacobethan with good detailing on tight L plan with school and teacher's house with staircase/latrine tower at right angle junction and sunken playground partly extended under school building. School of 4 storeys and attic with 7 storey east corner tower. Playground elevation of 2 major gabled bays. 2 big multi-light mullioned and transomed ground floor windows between half octagon brick and stone banded piers. 1st floor has triple groups of mullioned transomed windows with linked segmental stone relieving arches, paired windows to 2nd floor and triple groups of attic lights, the central one taller with transoms. Oriel corner tower with turret roof. Latrine tower circular with shaped parapet and cupola vent; stone sill bands. The teacher's house of 4½ storeys, more appropriately domestic with banding reserved for attic storey and with corner entrance with slightly Baroque details set under corbelling with oriels above. Side elevation has 3-light mullioned-transomed wood casements segmental arched. Segmental arched loggia to attic storey. Picturesque group with Nos. 39 to 47(odd)qv. Survey of London; Vol. XL.
