TQ 2880 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOUTH AUDLEY 79/17 STREET, Wl 14.11.85 No. 72 G.V. II Terraced town house. 1736 by Edward Shepherd, probably stuccoed c.1830 with extra storey added. Stucco, slate roof. 4 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 2 windows wide. Doorway to right probably in original rusticated surround, panelled door and patterned fanlight. Ground floor canted bay window with thin fluted column dividers and fanlight over transom, inserted in 1887. Upper floors have sashes recessed in moulded architraves. Bracketed stone cornice over 2nd floor, attic coping. Cast iron geometric patterned balconettes. Wrought iron area railings with urn finials. Interior original plan survives with top lit staircase between front and back rooms, some doorcases, otherwise largely Edwardian features. Part of Edward Shepherd's development of No. 71 to 75 consec. The house has associations with the French Royal Family in exile during the Napoleonic Wars, being the London residence of the Comte d'Artois (later Charles X) from 1805 to 1814.
