Farmhouse, now house. C14 or C15 core, remodelled early C17 with later
additions and alterations. Timber frame now mainly rendered except
for right gable end which has one blade of large true cruck visible;
painted sandstone plinth and plain tile roofs. Originally an open-
hall house, of which one cruck truss survives, apparently converted
to baffle-entry plan of 2 wide framed bays early C17; late C17 cowhouse
with loft above converted to domestic accommodation C20; roof structure of
house part drastically altered above tie beam level. 2 storeys; C20
casement on ground floor to left of shallow gabled porch with C20 nail-
studded door on site of earlier porch; narrow fixed-light C19 window
with leaded panes immediately above porch. Set-back bay to right has
C19 casement on each floor, also with leaded lights. Axial red brick
stack directly above porch in roof slope. True cruck truss to right
gable end has upper and lower collars and truncated apex; fragmentary
rectangular panels visible on both floors to back wall on left. Two
late C20 casements to ground floor of former cowhouse with contemporary
gabled dormers breaking eaves directly above. Original principal rafters
with raking struts from tie beam exposed beneath raised eaves to right
gable end; vertical posts beneath tie beam mainly concealed by painted
brick lean-to. Interior: left ground floor room has close studding
to front wall and cross wall; square panels to back wall. Moulded
spine beam with run-out stops; C17 stone fireplace with moulded surround
terminating in ogee stops to base, moulded mantel-shelf. Right ground-
floor room has brick inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel.
Base of cruck truss with chamfered brace visible; vertical posts in
wall behind represent left gable end of former cowhouse. Pantry in
rear left corner of house has sandstone-walled cellar beneath. First
floor: cruck truss is visible to right gable end with slot for massive
trenched purlin and large spurs still extant; peat brick infill to cruck
exposed in left first-floor room of former cowhouse. Massive central
stack has C17 panelled doors to either side; vertical posts with long
straight tension braces visible beneath tie beam of centre truss.
Left room has square-headed stone fireplace with moulded mantel-shelf
like that in left ground-floor room; inset wall cupboard with H-hinges.
