GV II Item includes No. 1 High Street. House now 2 shops C18, probably early-mid altered C19 and C20. Rendered and painted brick and timber studwork with brick infill; plain tile roof. 2 storeys with attic. 2 x 2 bays, No. 1 High Street with C20 rear extension (not of special interest). High Street elevation has: Mid C20 shop front on right with 4-pane sash over; and on left, bowed shop window on corner with curved glass panes over low stall riser, slender pilasters, narrow fascia, corniced flat roof supporting large wooden letters reading 'TOBACCONIST': To right of this shop window is C20 door, and above it a 4-pane sash with moulded wooden hood. Dentilled and moulded wooden eaves cornice, broken by right-hand window. Hipped roof with parallel ridges running behind at right angles and hipped at rear ends. Left return (Bridge Street): on right the curved shop window returns. On left is a C19 shop front with narrow pilasters supporting deep fascia; low glazed brick stall risers; central doorway in angled recess; and slender columns with bulbous bases and capitals to windows. On 1st floor a 4-light wooden casement window with transom and moulded timber hood. Eaves treatment as before. Gabled dormer with casement window. Rendered stack at left end. Interior: No. 2 Bridge Street has: Leaded casement secondary windows above low cupboards to the wider shop front and some decoratively - bracketed shelves across mirror. C19 stair; on 1st floor dado panelling (removed at front) and fireplace with dentilled and flinted cornice (and later iron inset); in attic, roof truss has tie-beam and collar. No. 1 High Street: On 1st floor, late C19 board doors and partitions; queen strut roof truss, with purlins carried on principal rafters. The building is on an important corner site in the historic centre of the town. Included for group value.
