CITY OF WESTMINSTER STRAND WC2 TQ 3080 NW and NE Nos 96 to 104 (consec) 72/100; 73/40 (Simpson's) GV II Extension to the Savoy Hotel complex. 1903-04 by T. E. Collcutt, part of the Savoy Court enlargement of the Savoy Hotel. Doulton's Carrara Ware terracotta facing, green pantile and plain tile roof. Free Northern Renaissance with feature of corner turret instead of gables. Part of an almost symmetrical composition with Nos 89 to 95 consec. flanking the entrance to Savoy Court and the hotel. 7 storeys (including ground floor mezzanine and attic storey) and 2 tiers of attics in steep mansard. 8 windows wide, bowed corner-cum-tower and 6 window return to Savoy Court. Ground floor with shop fronts, corner bank and entrance to Simpson's,all framed by Ionic pilasters which rise through mezzanine, with 3 light windows, to soffit of 2nd floor continuous entablature - balustraded balcony. Upper floors of Strand front have narrow paired and single,architraved windows, as shallow superimposed canted bay windows in every other bay but with shallow segmental bow to left end. To right the corner is treated as tower with bowed tripartite windows to cornice between buttresses, fully developed above attic storey with 2 storey drum and finialed dome, the buttresses finished off with inverted console-scrolls to top stage and ball finished dies above dome cornice. Bold cornice over 5th floor and eaves cornice to sheer attic. The mansard has corniced and segmental pedimented dormers and massive banded chimney stacks. Garland enriched aprons and cartouches to 3rd, 4th and 5th floor Similar return to Savoy Court but without bay windows. Simpson's retains its original Edwardian restaurant interiors, some of the rooms with decoration in the Neo-Adam style.
