HADLOW CARPENTERS LAKE TQ 65 SW 3/12 Bourne Mill Cottage 23.9.74 II
Former miller's house. It is said to have been originally a bakery attached to the nearby mill. C18 origins, converted to a miller's house in the mid C19, refurbished with studio addition circa 1974; white-washed brick; brick stacks and chimneyshafts; slate roof to the main house, rest is peg-tile.
Plan: House faces south south east, say south. it has a 2-room plan, one room each side of central entrance hall and staircase. If the left (west) room was heated the stack is now disused. The right room has a rear lateral stack which also serves the lean-to outshot that end. C20 studio addition on right end built as a crosswing flush with the front and with an outer lateral stack.
House is 2 storeys, the studio is single storey but built as high as the main house, and outbuildings to right (east) now used as a garage.
Exterior: Main house as a symmetrical 3-window front. Each side are mid/late C19 full height canted bay windows containing horned sashes, 12-panes to front and 8-panes each side. First floor centre a rounded headed window with glazing bars over the doorway which contains a C19 6-panel door behind a low pitch gabled porch on plain posts. Low pitch roof is hipped both ends. Studio front has full height round-headed window with glazing bars and roof is hipped. Lower outbuilding to right has blind wall to front and hipped roof.
