STEEL HEATH
The Cottage
II
Squatter's cottage. C18 or later. Timber-framed with painted brick
infilling; corrugated iron roof, possibly covering thatch, with brick stack
at left end of ridge. Single storey with attic only at right end. One
eyebrow dormer to right; two windows on ground floor, both casements.
Framing in long horizontal panels, with infilling not painted to rear.
Interior: rafter roof of thin scantling with queen struts to principal
rafters; staggered purlins. Fire-hood in place at eastern end of cottage,
timber-framed and plastered. The existence of the fire-hood is very rare
at this date, made more rare by the non-survival of other examples; its
existence is the reason for the listing of this cottage.
