1. WRITTLE THE GREEN 5213 (South Side) WRITTLE No 11 (Aubyns) TL 6706 27/549 10.4.67. I GV 2. This is a considerably restored building but it is a complete timber-framed house of circa 1500, with plaster infil, and the general impression is most effective. All the timber-framing is exposed. It is of hall house shape with cross wings at the east and west ends. The 1st storey is jettied on the north front of the cross wings and the west side of the west wing, supported on exposed joists and there is a heavy angle post and bracket. On the ground storey of the west side there are 3 blocked original openings, probably a shop, and a blocked original doorway. The wings are 2 storeys and the centre block is 1 storey. The west wing is extended to the south, with a jettied and plastered upper storey, The windows are casements with lattice leaded lights, mainly mullioned. Roof tiled. The interior has original features and moulded ceiling beams. (RCHM 12).
All the listed buildings around The Green form a group. (nos 8,10,38,52,and 25 are buildings of local interest.)
