Two adjacent cottages. Circa mid-late C17 front cottage with. circa early C19 alterations and
circa early C19 cottage at rear; being converted into one house in 1993 circa early C19
alterations and circa early C19 cottage at rear; being converted into one house in 1993
Timber-framed, partly rebuilt in brick and clad in mathematical tiles, the rear cottage light
scantling timber frame clad in mathematical tiles. Thatched roofs, the front cottage with
half-hipped ends and axial brick stack, the rear cottage has gable ends and gable-end stack.
PLAN: Front cottage has a 2-room plan, the left hand room heated from the central axial
stack, the right hand room unheated and with an inserted floor. The rear cottage situated at
right-angles behind has a 2-room plan, the larger right hand room has a gable-end stack,
the small unheated room on left has an inserted C20 staircase. The space between the two
cottages has been filled in recently to create one house. EXTERIOR: 1-storey and attic.
Front cottage has 2-window west front with C20 3-light ground floor casements, C20 glazed
door at centre and 2 small 2-light attic casements with glazing bars in thatch at eaves level.
Timber frame exposed in end gables. The rear cottage has 1:2-window south front, 2-light
casements with glazing bars, smaller attic casements under eyebrow eaves, ground floor left
small single-light casement; at rear blocked central doorway and small casement on right.
INTERIOR: Front Cottage; left room has high ceiling with [raised?] chamfered axial beam
with straight-cut stops and brick fireplace with unchamfered bressummer; room on right has
inserted ceiling; roof of two bays plus stack bay at centre, clasped purlins and common rafter
couples intact. Rear cottage; chamfered cross-beam with hollow-step stops and C20
chimneypiece; C20 staircase in smaller left bay; roof ceiled but remains of central partition
exposed
