Details

WESTON-UNDER- - SJ 52 NE REDCASTLE C.P. 12/178 Hermitage Farmhouse - - II Farmhouse. Early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with wattle and daub and red brick infill, cladding and additions; plain tile roof. L-plan with gabled cross-wing slightly projecting to rear on right and outshut running almost full length of hall range, which appears to have been extended to left in C18. One storey and attic. Framing: to cross-wing; rectangular panels, 3 from cill to tie beam, with long straight tension braces, V-strut to front collar and king-strut to rear collar; right wall rebuilt in early C2O red brick and rear gable clad in same brick below tie beam. Long hall range extended in C18 brick (Flemish stretcher bond) to left of straight joint and clad or rebuilt in early C19 brick (mixed bond) to right. Hall range has late C19 casement-fenestration, one of 3 lights to each side of contemporary half-glazed door to left of centre, left with concrete lintel, right with segmental head. Gabled eaves dormers directly above, left probably C18, right early C20. Blocked doorway to right of window with concrete lintel and another with segmental head to right of segmental-headed casement. One 3-light C19 casement on each floor to gable of cross-wing. Axial red brick ridge stack to right of hall range has projections to each face, front with diamond-shaped pattern; small integral end stack to left. Regularly coursed and dressed sandstone rubble outshut to rear probably C19 and later C19 red brick lean-to against left gable end. Right wall of cross-wing formerly had timber framed outshut abutting. Interior: timber frame (square panels) exposed to cross wall of cross-wing and visible beneath plaster to former gable end of hall range (to left of present entrance). Room to right of this has deep-chamfered cross beam with straight-cut stops and flat joists; Victorian wooden fireplace with carved consoles in infilled inglenook. Left ground-floor room has chamfered spine beam and inglenook fireplace with wooden lintel; oak winder staircase behind door to front left-hand corner. Another oak winder staircase to rear right-hand corner of hall range. Plank and muntin doors with strap hinges throughout and several C18 inset wall cupboards, including to larder in wall to left of right room of hall range. First floor: inspection not possible at time of resurvey (March 1986) but said to have exposed roof trusses.
