WESTON-UNDER- WESTON SJ 5628-5728 REDCASTLE C.P. 17/195 Belfry Cottage - and Belfry Lodge GV II Shown on O.S. map as C.E. Primary School and Old School House. School, now divided into 2 dwellings. Mid- to late C19 with later additions and alterations. Planted timber frame with rendered infill on painted sandstone plinth; machine tile roof with pointed wooden finials to gables; L-plan with shorter red brick range to rear on left running parallel with rear range. One storey and gable-lit attic. Framing: small rectangular panels, 4 from cill to wall-plate, with repeated pattern of 3 quatrefoils above ground-floor windows; carved corner brackets to gable ends and curved struts from collars. 3-light mullioned and transomed wooden oriel windows with leaded lights above transom to left and right of open central gabled porch over nail-studded panelled door with Tudor-arched head. Similar windows to ground floor of gable ends with plainer flatter oriels to first floor. Square lantern with pyramidal cap to centre of ridge houses bell. Red brick range to rear has brick ridge stack with paired octagonal shafts and plain moulded stone capping. Included for group value.
